Editing Keys

Introduction

In this section we cover some of the basics of editing the keys using the graph editor. The advantage of editing data at this stage is that a problematic marker can be corrected - which can influence more than one bone.

Editing Mode

It is best to switch into a 3 panel mode, with the "perspective view", "data health", and the "Graph" view in order to properly edit keys

  • Under Workspace, select the 3-Split Right
  • In the left view, set to Perspective Persp.
  • In the top/right view, set to Data Health Check Data Health Check
  • In the top/bottom view, set to Graph Graph

  • To edit a marker, move the character in perspective view (LMB) and then select it (Alt-LMB-Drag)

Deleting Keys

One of the simplest ways to fix data problems is to actually delete the keys - this is may seem like the opposite of what we want to do, but as the marker trajectories are based on spline curves, they can make the motion smoother. This can be seen in the following example:

Key Problems

To delete keys the following steps are used:

  • In the "Graph" view, view only channel (X, Y, Z) that should be deleted (using the X, Y, and Z views at the top menu)
  • Select the keys that will be selected (Alt-LMB-Drag)
  • Press Cut Keys to remove the keys you have selected

Moving Keys

If we need to make adjustments to the keys, we can move them +/- for each channel. This allows us to make fine adjustments where the system just isn't going to understand what is required or where that key should be. To move a key, the following steps are followed:

  • Switch off Select Mode in the "Graph" view
  • Select the key that needs to be edited (Alt-LMB-Drag)
  • Hold down Ctrl while over the key, and move the key up or down

Tip: If we want to move keys, and they do not move, you need to make sure you are in the correct mode. Switch off Select Mode
